it's a path that brings you to the point where you repeatedly bring yourself into the present moment by relating to something right here, right now. like your breathing, or a mantra, or a picture on the wall, or a yoga pose. being in this moment of presence allows you to come out of your mind. when we are in the mind, we are either in the past or in the future. in the present moment we are in stillness. a stillness that allows us to be. right here. right now.
stillness is a path in many traditions. but you don't only come to stillness by arranging ikebana, practicing zen meditation, going on a pilgrimage, or dancing a sufi dance. you can also come to stillness, come into the present moment, while washing the dishes, taking the dog for a walk, or staring at the starry sky. but you have to make the effort to do this. it becomes a habit. coming into one-pointed focus, into what we in kundalini yoga call shuniya, will change your life from one of overload and frantic reaction, to one of inner peace and calm right action in the world.
Yoga is the martial art of the soul, and the opponent is the strongest you've ever faced: your ego. Shuniya means zero. The moment you become zero, then all powers will prevail through you… the moment you become that, then everything radiates from you.
